A New Strategy for Economic Growth Region 8
Purdue University and Indiana University in cooperation with
state government have teamed up to create a new strategy for
Economic Growth Region 8 (EGR 8). This region includes Brown,
Daviess, Greene, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange and Owen counties.
The U. S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) is funding
this research project to develop a model that can be used by
America’s rural communities. The Purdue-Indiana University
team was chosen as one of only two grantees in the nation. This
model will assess and maximize their regional economic advantages.
The new strategy will build upon EGR 8’s economic assets.
A Focus on Growth Clusters
The research component will focus on business clusters as the
foundation for future economic growth. Clusters are groups of
businesses that share common or complementary markets, suppliers,
or workforce skills. Leaders in each of the eight counties will
help identify competitive niches and implementation strategies
to take advantage of EGR 8’s growth-cluster opportunities.
The Planning Process
The universities will complete the EGR 8 cluster research in
early spring. The regional planning process involving local
officials and stakeholders will begin in late March and conclude
by the end of May. An Indiana-based planning firm, Strategic
Development Group, will assist Purdue University, Indiana University,
and local stakeholders in developing this strategy.
Representatives from government, business, education and other
sectors will be asked to provide critical information for the
development of the regional strategy and national model. The
Purdue-Indiana University team will be available to report to
county commissioners, mayors, and city and town councils on
the planning process.
How Will the New Economic Development Strategy Help
this Region and My Community?
This strategy will set the stage for an ongoing regional initiative
to stimulate new investment and job creation within all participating
counties. The potential growth clusters identified in the regional
strategy will be provided to each EGR 8 community for its economic
development effort.
